Day 23 Baby Amazon

We have named this little guy, Patience, his posture pretty much speaks for itself. He is always very patient when being fed, while the others call out the cute little amazon "feed me" sound, this little guy just sits and waits like he went through a European Finishing school and has all the manners in the world :)

The baby vosmaeri eclectus are coming along. They are still gaining weight. They are not growing as fast as Jewel and Darla did, but then again, Jewel and Darla were a little above average in the weight gain. The down feathes are coming in a little slower on these two.

We have decided to have the Panama sexed, because it drives me nuts not knowing if it is a male or a female, and I would like to give it a name, so I will be taking it to have blood drawn for DNA test in a few days.
Anyone care to take a guess?

Day 19 Baby Eclectus

The babies are at day 19, getting close to time to to pull from mamma. We noticed they seem a little more bare than Jewel and Darla were at this age. We are not sure if this is because they are a different sex, or if mamma might be preening some of their down feathers out. She did this last time at about 4 weeks, but they were completely covered. We are going to watch them close tonight and tomorrow, and if it looks like she is pulling the down feathers, we will pull them and start hand feeding in a few days when both have the eyes all the way.

Hello everyone, what an interesting weekend! Today we are welcoming Frodo's brother! We named him Sammy, after his friend from the movie since Frodo Baggins has not brother's or sisters.
He is a Red Side Eclectus. We will be hand-feeding and weaning him, and hopefully finding a great home so he can bring as much joy as his brother Frodo has to us!

I think this Boing has become part of Jewel's anatomy. She rarely wants to get off, she really likes it and when she is being so good, it is hard to deny her.
Sometimes she goes all the way up tot he top and climbs out on the curtain rod.

Being Good

Being Good

Darla has been super good the last few days, I think her and her sister Jewel, are finally mellowing out a bit. Darla went to the Vet today, and they use to scream for each other when separated, but they did not today, in fact Darla was great, she did not even flinch when they drew blood.
BTW: Vet check was all good.

Day 2 Baby Eclectus

Wow!, baby 2 hatched less than 24 hours apart from the first one. We are already uncertain of which one is which. We are assuming the one sitting up and wiggling about (that is why head was blurry) is the first one. Both were moving around and peeping.
Eclectus Chick pipping out of egg

Eclectus Chick pipping out of egg
Originally uploaded by shon.miles.
The hatching process actually takes several days from the time the chick first pips the shell. When at this age they have a special "egg tooth" that is on the end of their beak, they use it to break out of the shell. The egg tooth goes away after a few weeks.
